Hardcover. viii, 344 pages.  An early study of the spiritualist and occult movements in Victorian London, based on the author’s first-hand visits to séances, trance meetings, and other esoteric gatherings. Davies, a clergyman and social observer, records the range of mystical and heterodox beliefs flourishing in the capital during the 1870s.  A very good copy in original brown cloth with black decoration and gilt lettering to spine.  This copy with contemporary newspaper clippings pertaining to spiritualism, including one on English medium’s in Russia, pasted to the endpapers.
