(New York, NY): New York Telephone Co., 1970. First edition thus. Quarto. A massive 2148 pages. A fantastic example of ‘straight society’ embracing the psychedelic counter-culture. Perhaps in an attempt to jazz up the notoriously most-boring book that ever was, New York Telephone embraced the psychedelic/pop art popularized by Push Pin Studios in the 1960s. This is the official yellow pages telephone book with a wonderful cover design / illustration by Peter Max. Max’s design is a veritable smorgasbord of motifs he loved and returned to frequently. During the Summer of 1970 it was rumoured that many Manhattan residents experienced (LSD) contact highs and some authorities blamed this publication suggesting that the cover had been dosed in a street version of ‘moby grape’ one of the more potent batches of LSD to hit the streets. This copy in very nice condition in illustrated wrappers, internal pages age toned. A superb relic from the psychedelic era and an invaluable time capsule providing documentary evidence of 1970s Manhattan.
