A Magazine Curated By is a fashion magazine that explores the universe of a chosen fashion designer, different in each issue. The magazine invites a guest curator – an international fashion designer, group or house – to develop innovative, personalised content to express their aesthetic and cultural values. Each issue celebrating the designer’s ethos: their people, their passion, their stories, emotions, fascinations, spontaneity and authenticity. Originally conceived as Belgium’s first fashion magazine (ignoring the existence of Bam!) the idea was initiated by Walter van Beirendonck for the Landed Geland fashion festival in Antwerp and began life as N°A followed by N°B, N°C, N°D and N°E before becoming, in 2004, A Magazine Curated By with this change the magazine quickly gained international acclaim for its intimate perspective into the minds of the world’s inspiring fashion designers working today. The series made explicit the idea of the fashion designer as auteur — not just a stylist or brand, but a thinker, editor, and artist in their own right. Maison Martin Margiela’s debut issue (2004) set the tone, presenting a vision steeped in anonymity, deconstruction, and collaborative mythmaking. Subsequent curators like Yohji Yamamoto, Haider Ackermann, Undercover’s Jun Takahashi, and Alessandro Michele further expanded this narrative, using their issues to share personal archives, artistic inspirations, and experimental visuals that rarely surface in commercial campaigns or shows. Despite its avant-garde approach, A Magazine remained embedded in the industry — often coinciding with major moments for the curators: e.g., Kim Jones’s Dior Men debut, Alessandro Michele’s Gucci renaissance, or Pierpaolo Piccioli’s redefinition of Valentino. The issues here are N°1 Maison Martin Margiela, N°2 Yohji Yamamoto, N°3 Haider Ackermann, N°4 Jun Takahashi, N°5 Martine Sitbon, N°6 Veronique Branquinho, N°7 Kris Van Assche, N°8 Riccardo Tisci, N°9 Proenza Schouler, N°10 Giambattista Valli, N°11 Rodarte, N°12 Stephen Jones, N°13 Iris Van Herpen, N°14 Delfina Delettrez, N°15 Thom Browne, N°16 Alessandro Michele, N°17 Eckhaus Latta, N°18 Simone Rocha, N°19 Kim Jones, N°20 Pierpaolo Piccioli, and N°21 Lucie and Luke Meier together with the aforementioned Femininities. All issues generally in very good condition or better save issue 9 which has some creasing to the covers. Whilst individual issues arent particularly scarce the magazine is seldom offered in a substantial run. A nice offering of this landmark publication redefined the role of editorial in fashion, elevated the voice of the designer, and carved out a space for print as artistic collaboration rather than marketing vehicle. Its influence continues to ripple across the worlds of fashion, art, publishing, and visual culture. (Additional postage will apply).
